Air travellers are advised to check flight schedules today before leaving for the airport after Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri - at times packing hurricane-force gusts - grounded more than 380 flights yesterday and left passengers stranded.

Hundreds of passengers were still massed at the airport last night as the storm moved away and airlines struggled to ease the backlog after a day that saw the No8 typhoon signal hoisted for almost 12 hours.

Kammuri closed businesses and schools, suspended land and sea traffic, injured at least 37 people, felled at least 35 trees and caused one landslide.

The storm - which lashed Ngong Ping on Lantau Island with a maximum gust of 227km/h - also sent two windows from the new One Island East office tower in Quarry Bay crashing into a nearby building, and battered parents and students queuing outside schools for Form Six places.

Airlines managed to keep largely to their schedules in the morning, despite the No8 signal being raised at 5.40am.

But Cathay Pacific and Dragonair, citing unstable weather at the airport, announced at 2pm that they had decided to suspend operations between 4pm and 8pm, affecting 50 flights.
