Metal objects are commonly recommended by fung shui masters as they are used to reduce the negative earth energies associated with illness and accidents. In the cycle of production, metal is formed from earth, thereby reducing its power.

The purer and heavier the metal, the greater its effectiveness in absorbing negative earth energy. While gold and silver would be ideal, their cost sometimes precludes them from being used. Copper can also be considered, and although iron is an alloy, it is an acceptable alternative and much more effective than brass and aluminium.

Traditionally, fung shui masters have recommended the use of wind chimes and Chinese coins. For instance, five old Chinese coins (tied together with red string) can be placed under your mat or along the edge of your door to reduce the 'five' yellow earth energy there. A windchime with six rods is used to contain the 'two' illness energy, and two and six are believed to form a pair, according to the theory of the I Ching trigrams. These days, statues, light fittings and gadgets can be used to represent metal energy.

Grey and white are the colours that represent metal; those who are not keen to have metallic objects displayed prominently in their home can incorporate these hues into the interior design.
