In Beijing, security measures even heavier than those at the Olympics opening ceremony were evident on the streets with police, security guards and volunteers stationed every few metres outside the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium.
Wang Wei , vice-president of the Beijing Olympic organising committee, said security would be increased.
