Xinjiang attacks spark clampdown

Suspected terrorists staged a series of attacks against police, a market and government buildings in central Xinjiang yesterday, leaving 11 people dead.

Police killed eight attackers, two others committed suicide and two were taken into custody. Three others were on the run.

In Beijing, security measures even heavier than those at the Olympics opening ceremony were evident on the streets with police, security guards and volunteers stationed every few metres outside the Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium.

Wang Wei , vice-president of the Beijing Olympic organising committee, said security would be increased.
