John Sin, 36, says it is doubtful there will be terror attacks in Hong Kong during the Olympics and thinks the media should focus on the athletes
I don't think Hong Kong will be attacked by terrorists. If terrorists really want to cause disruption to the Olympic Games, I think they would prefer launching attacks in Beijing rather than in Hong Kong, as the impact would be more impressive.
The media has run big stories about the bomb-like object found at an MTR station in Causeway Bay. But I am not too worried. Hong Kong is a very densely populated city and if someone really wants to make trouble in Hong Kong, it is very easy. He or she can throw a bomb anywhere and for sure someone will be injured, if not killed. What's the point of hiding a little bomb-like object here and there?
I don't see why someone who really wanted to cause a lot of trouble in Hong Kong would hide that tiny object at the MTR station. What impact can be achieved? But then this case distracted a lot of police and caused panic among the officers. After all, they are the ones working on the front line.
I think someone has played a dirty trick at a very sensitive time. If we were not hosting the equestrian events now, it might be just another small story. But newspaper reporters have packaged it as if it was a very serious case.
I tend not to believe every story that is reported in newspapers. I think readers should be critical and screen out the real news stories that report the facts from those that aim to make something boring sound exciting to boost circulation.
I think the mass media should stick to reporting the truth, as that is what quality news stories are all about. I believe the function of newspapers is to inform the public about what is going on around them and the main aim is not to entertain readers.
