The world's finest dancing horses will battle it out at Sha Tin for Olympic gold tonight. These beautiful horses come mostly from Europe and have taken years to learn the special steps required for this performance.
The sport in which they are competing is called 'dressage' and can be quite boring under ordinary circumstances. However, these circumstances are anything but boring.
Tonight, the horses will dance to music specially arranged to show them off, like ballet dancers or beauty pageant entrants. This special competition is called a 'kur'.
To get to this competition, entrants had to take part in two preliminary rounds. The top 15 horses from those rounds can be seen in action tonight. The competitors carry their scores from the previous rounds into tonight's competition, so if they are behind they have to be extra good to win.
At the start of this round, former gold medallist Germany's Isabell Werth and her big brown horse Satchmo are in the lead. This is despite the fact Satchmo faltered during the previous round of the competition. During a routine called a 'piaffe', which is a very smart movement where the horse trots on the spot, Satchmo suddenly panicked, rushing backwards, nearly out of the ring.
This is almost unheard of in dressage, in which the horses are supposed to be the picture of cool and calm. But Werth and Satchmo managed to get their act together and still finish in the lead.
