Eleven-year-old Chizuko Mikamo has been orphaned and is now being cared for by her aunt and uncle. They try to make Chizuko happy, but she treats them coldly and refuses to eat anything her aunt cooks for her, believing her relatives are trying to poison her in order to get her inheritance.

Elsewhere, international thief Twenty Faces lifts the roof off a small mansion to steal a priceless jewellery box in plain sight of dozens of police officers, making an amazing escape by seemingly walking on air and vanishing into the night.

Chizuko longs to be like the thief, free to travel the world as she pleases. When she faints from a lack of food, the family's friendly butler looks after her - and then reveals himself as Twenty Faces, stationed at the home to steal the Mikamo treasure, the Anastasia Ruby.
