IBM budgets US$300m for 13 client resiliency service centres IBM Corp will invest US$300 million this year to build 13 business resiliency service delivery centres in 10 key cities, including Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai. The United States-based information technology giant said the initiative was the largest of its kind in its industry and would ensure customers have uninterrupted operations across all layers of their business. The centres are specifically designed to help clients maintain business operations under almost any conditions and recover rapidly from disasters. Bien Perez ZTE unit expands release of C79 mobile handset in US The United States-based unit of ZTE Corp, the mainland's second-largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, has broadened the release of its new code division multiple access-standard mobile phone model in the country. The C79 handset is being offered by US mobile provider MetroPCS Communications which had 4.4 million subscribers as of the first quarter this year. First-half overseas revenue for Hong Kong and Shenzhen-listed ZTE was up 58.9 per cent at 12.66 billion yuan (HK$14.48 billion), accounting for 64 per cent of the group's revenue. Bien Perez China Information Security secures Xinjiang police contract China Information Security Technology, a software supplier and systems integrator for the country's public security sector, has won a contract to build the Police Geographic Information System for Kashgar city in Xinjiang province. Based in Shenzhen, the company will complete the US$1 million project by the end of the year. Jiang Huailin, chief executive at Nasdaq-listed China Information Security, said the project also expanded the company's coverage to more than 20 provinces across the country. Bien Perez HKUST chooses Cisco to bring hostel connectivity to students The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is adopting networking equipment from United States-based Cisco Systems to bring wireless data coverage in its student hostels. 'This sets a new benchmark for wireless networks among universities in Hong Kong,' said Lawrence Law, director of the university's information technology services centre. Cisco's 802.11n-standard wireless infrastructure will serve more than 4,100 resident students, providing them with internet connectivity and support for e-learning applications via their notebook personal computers and smartphones.
