Primary-school girl abused at love hotels
A veteran primary-school teacher admitted in the Court of First Instance yesterday that he had sex with  a 10-year-old pupil in love hotels.
The court heard that the sexual relationship, which lasted for a year, came to light when the pair were caught - after school in a hotel room in Tsuen Wan - during a police inspection on January 16.
The teacher told police that he had  sex with the girl because he  was 'momentarily' unable to control himself.
Chew Hin-cheung, 53, who is married with a seven-year-old son, pleaded guilty to three charges of having sex with a child under the age of 13, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
He  denied two counts of indecent assault and one count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a child. But the prosecution agreed not to proceed with those counts.
During their relationship, Chew had given the victim presents including a  mobile phone,  a game console and a soft toy,  the court heard. He gave her HK$100 a week in pocket money  and paid  her mobile-phone bills.
The victim - who was born in September 1996 -  told police that Chew had taken her  to love hotels on three other occasions.  Their sexual relationship began when she was only 10,  in January  last year, she said.
On that occasion, she met Chew alone on a Saturday and  agreed to have sex with him because she felt he was 'a nice man' who cared for her classmates, she told police.
Prosecutor Anna Lai Yuen-kee said police interviewed the defendant on January 18, when he  acknowledged he had been the victim's class teacher in 2006, and  used to go out with  a group of students on Saturdays before he started seeing the victim alone. He treated the victim as his  daughter and the victim treated him as a father, he said.
He  admitted that he had unprotected sex with the girl on the occasions as charged.
In mitigation, defence barrister Kenneth Chik said his client treated the victim as a  daughter because he had always wanted a daughter but had only been able to have a son when he was well into middle age. Chew's wife could not have a second child, the barrister said.  He acknowledged the seriousness of the case, saying the court might consider a jail term of at least 10 years.
Chew has resigned from the school,  has lost his pension, and his wife has begun  divorce proceedings.
Mr Justice Louis Tong Po-sun  adjourned sentencing to September 12, for psychological and background  reports.
