'Reginababy' joins the rap bandwagon
The Civic Party did it. The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong went one step further and attempted it live. Now, Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee's ticket for the Hong Kong Island constituency also has a rap song and music video posted on its website, and on YouTube - with the number of hits approaching 7,500. The video is narrated through the eyes of an 18 year-old who raps about meeting Mrs Ip in a restaurant while she is canvassing for votes. From being a teenager not usually interested in politics, the narrator begins to develop an understanding of current issues and sings the praises of Mrs Ip and her running mate, Louis Shih Tai-cho.
'Everybody, vote for Ip Lau Suk-yee, everybody vote for Reginababy,' he sings as he wraps up the rap.
Ronald Chan Ngok-pang, who is also on the ticket, said a talented volunteer came up with the idea. As to why the candidates themselves had not rapped in the song, he replied: 'We prefer to allow those with real talent to express themselves.'
All the fun of electoral downloading
While many have complained about the lack of an election atmosphere this year, with the public far more indifferent to the poll than in previous years, there is at least some more fun to be had browsing the various candidates' websites. Songs, videos, even MSN icons, are all available for download on the websites of major parties.
