Excelsior celebrates 35 years with more renovations on the cards

As the poor cousin in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, the Excelsior may not boast the glamour or exclusivity of the other properties, but that didn't stop them from having a good time on Tuesday celebrating its 35th anniversary and the renovation of its ballrooms.

'In Hong Kong, hotels come and go, so being here for 35 years means we're doing something right,' general manager Amanda Hyndman (left) told the crowd.

Although, the look is newer, it's still the same mass class of clients and associates that turned up. That would explain the Hong Kong-style buffet for guests, many of whom were taking pictures of themselves in front of the ice sculpture when they weren't queuing for Peking duck and oysters. We thought one of the lucky draw prizes - a year's supply of coffee and egg tart - was also quaint.

They're not done with the upgrades, which have cost HK$7 million so far. Next up they're opening a wellness centre.

'We're calling it a wellness centre because it'll be more than just sweat and grunt, but not quite a spa.'

Also, a roof terrace will be added to TOTT's at the start of next year.

Incidentally, the hotel boss herself has gone through a bit of change too. Formerly Amanda Scott, now it's Hyndman because she decided to tie the knot with her partner during the Rugby Sevens this year. 'We thought there's nothing else to do so let's get married.'

Congratulations then on both the professional and personal front.
