Course raises construction safety awareness among students
Hilti (Hong Kong), an international construction tools manufacturer, has set up an education facility called the Hilti Innovation Centre at Polytechnic University's Industrial Centre. It's a joint effort to raise construction safety awareness among students and industry practitioners.
'We want to transfer knowledge from the industry,' said Albert Kwok, head of building and construction unit at the Industrial Centre. 'The Innovation Centre will serve as a venue to facilitate training in fastening and protection technology for faculty members and students at all Hong Kong universities.'
The Innovation Centre not only showcases the tools designed and developed by the company, but also provides space for training programmes and seminars.
Mr Kwok said workplace safety programmes formed an integral part of industry training at PolyU and had become a mandatory subject for first-year students in the faculty of construction and land use, and the faculty of engineering.
All students undertaking industrial training at the Innovation Centre have to complete a 15- to 24-hour training module that includes electrical safety, welding safety, machine safety and height safety. Upon completion of the training, students are awarded a certificate validated by the Labour Department.
