Normally it's classical music that gets digitally morphed into modern techno. But French pianist Maxence Cyrin has taken the opposite approach on his album Modern Rhapsodies.
Maxence was trained in classical piano and went on to study music. When he turned 18 he started working with new-wave and electro-industrial sounds to create surreal fantasy pieces. He also discovered a taste for techno and rave music and released a number of records. At 25 he discovered the easy-listening melodies of Burt Bacharach and other crooners and took to singing them in Paris nightclubs. Over the past two years, he has returned to classical music and now translates popular digital music pieces into classically styled piano solos.
Modern Rhapsodies contains 14 reinterpreted modern pieces which are unexpectedly effective and sometimes impressively dark. Highlights include Depeche Mode's Behind the Wheel, Moby's Go, Acid Eiffel by Choice and Lunatic Asylum's The Meltdown. The album shows anything is possible with a little imagination.
