Gnarls Barkley's The Odd Couple is the follow-up to the Grammy-winning St Elsewhere, which featured, Crazy, one of the biggest hits of 2006.
As expected from a group known for its eclectic sounds, there is a range of influences and genres on this album, from the soul-tinged Who's Gonna Save My Soul and the drum and bass beats of Open Book, to the Britpop lyrics of Whatever and the percussion-rich Surprise.
Unfortunately, there is nothing to compare to the catchy Crazy. But there are some catchy tracks, and singer Cee-Lo's versatile voice keeps the album from getting samey. The funk-driven Charity Case is reminiscent of Kanye West's Workout Plan, while A Little Better is more old school, with simple bass, piano and drums.
Who's Gonna Save My Soul is a highlight. The laidback instrumentation lets the vocals shine.
The silly lyrics of Neighbors and Would Be Killer let the album down.
But there are enough positive aspects to make this a great party or chill-out CD.
