The Chinese are not alone in faking performances during Olympic opening ceremonies. Australia's Sydney Symphony recently confirmed it mimed its entire musical presentation for the 2000 Sydney Olympics opening ceremony. Its 'performance' was pre-recorded days before the ceremony, and some of the music was recorded by a rival orchestra from Melbourne. Defending the decision, the symphony's managing director said the Olympic organisers wanted to leave nothing to chance. 'If you've got an event the size of the Olympics, and you've got millions of people watching it, you definitely have a backing track and mime to it, because anything could go wrong,' Trevor Green said. 'It's just a 'safety first' thing.'
