Go beyond your limits

Sunny Tse

ChoChukMo are ... cousins Jan and Kitty, who invited Mike, Lester and Yan, singers from three different bands to join their group, ensuring a particularly strong vocal line.

ChoChukMo means ... nothing. Each of us wrote a Chinese word on a piece of paper, folded it up and we drew three at random. We ended up with cho (catch), chuk (persist) and mo (feather).

We are ... playful musicians with creative minds and the courage to push ourselves beyond our limits.

Our music is ... versatile, incorporating everything from jazz, funk and reggae to disco music, rock and even classical music. It's hard to define our style - every song is a new experiment.

We sound a bit like ... no other band. We play at will and without rules.

Every one of us contributes a helping of our own preferences, style and understanding into each song. The resulting blend is a mixture of unexpected sounds and vibes.

It's impossible to describe our music as any particular genre.

We get inspiration from ... daily life. Our song Tell Laura I Love Her was intended as a follow-up to the classic of the same title.

With simple and direct lyrics, we question the ending of the old version. Maybe the sad ending is only the beginning of another story.

When you're into music, everything clicks. The most ordinary thing can be inspiring if you can connect with it.

Live gigs are ... more than just music, it's a mix of all the performing arts.

For our shows, we dress in our theme colour - pink - and play a video we created in the background. This way we're an item rather than individuals playing on their own.

We once ... played in front of an empty auditorium. No one could reach the venue due to the 2006 WTO riot but we insisted on playing on anyway.

Our high point ... was touring the Philippines with well-known Filipino band Sandwich and playing three gigs over five days.

We were completely blown away by the passionate music fans and the flourishing band scene in the country. The profound cultural shock gave us hope for the dim local Hong Kong music industry.

Our low point ...when the bills come in every month. Any broken equipment is considered a major blow.

Upon disagreement ... we vote.

The local band scene is ... blooming. Bands of different genres, techniques and backgrounds are active here. But you need to get in the scene to experience the diversity.

However, we're waiting for someone to take a risk and invest more in the scene, even though it only offers slow and low returns.

Local bands we like are ...

The Lovesong for their striking guitar sounds and their distinctive music.

Sea Monsters for their creativity and for daring to experiment.

The Yours for their crazy outfits and their ability to achieve surprising sound with limited skills.

SIQ for their power to wow the crowd with their unique tribal tunes.

We will ... release a full new album at Christmas time. It will be available in most record stores in Hong Kong.

We would like to thank ... Him from Group Studio for giving unconditional support to inexperienced bands - we've learned a lot from him. He's very willing to help out. Visit www.myspace.com/groupstudiohk to learn more.

Kids, listen ... don't let the media affect what you think. And don't dream about your dreams, go for them.
