Postal service expects profit to fall 10 per cent

Hongkong Post expected profit to drop 10 per cent, postmaster general Tam Wing-pong said yesterday, with global economic uncertainties likely to harm the department's performance. He expected an operational profit in the 2007-08 fiscal year of about HK$400 million, down 10.5 per cent from the HK$447.3 million of 2006-07. 'This is because of the civil service pay rise,' which he said added HK$90 million a year to the payroll. Despite the drop in profit, the number of mail items Hongkong Post handled last year increased 5.8 per cent to reach almost 1.41 billion. There were no plans to increase postage rates.
