A made-to-measure role for a hardworking textile professional awaits at a leading American apparel retailer. Links Recruitment is handling the search for a fabric manager for Talbots. 'Talbots needs someone who can truly understand the industry to come up with really beautiful fabric,' managing director Debbie Matson said. 'The ideal candidate has formal education in textiles and at least five to seven years' fabric management experience.' The candidate must like challenges, be optimistic, motivated, articulate with good verbal and written presentation skills, and be able to forecast and identify trends, colours and concepts. The fabric manager will be responsible for seasonal fabric development from preparing a seasonal fabric line plan to providing technical fabric support for the design, sourcing and buying teams. Ms Matson said the fabric manager would have to travel at least four times a year, such as at the start of each season to showrooms and fabric libraries. 'The big challenge is in dealing with fabric issues. Sometimes a fabric sample will pass the test, but when put into a style it may not work. This position can determine success or failure of the line.' Other duties will include conducting fabric research, sourcing and recommending new fabric vendors, purchasing sample yardage, tracking delivery and, most importantly, provide a vision each season for fabric direction.
