Local university students will soon be gracing the stage in Cantonese opera shows as part of a project to promote the traditional southern Chinese theatre art. The Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project will be run at the Centre for the Arts of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The centre's programme director, Grace Ling Lai-yun, said the project would enhance students' knowledge and appreciation of Cantonese Opera. 'This is the first official Cantonese opera project among local tertiary institutions. I hope the students will be drawn by their curiosity in the unique southern Chinese art to participate,' she said. Funded by the Home Affairs Bureau's Cantonese Opera Development Fund, the project will be open to all university students as well as those from the Hong Kong Institute of Education. The project includes a workshop, photography contest, seminars and performances. The workshop is limited to 30 students and three or four places would be allotted to each institution, Ms Ling said. The workshop starts on October 3 and the deadline for applications is September 26. To apply, e-mail: email@example.com .
