The Hong Kong Baptist University continues to grow in stature and prestige, and it now has new vacancies to fill. The tertiary institution, since it de-linked from the government's civil service pay scale in 2003, has also become a popular destination of employment for several top educators, researchers and other professionals.
In addition, the university added an academy for visual arts; a centre for holistic teaching and learning; a Jockey Club creative arts centre; and a research institute for contemporary China studies, among other projects and community programmes.
'Besides the numerous expansions, we also have several ongoing research projects which create perpetual hiring opportunities. Our employee turnover is fairly low for an educational institution, at between 5 and 8 per cent, and that also leads to vacancies which we have to fill each year,' said Karen Chan, the university's director of personnel.
The university employs about 2,000 staff and needs to fill another 70 positions, including 10 academic posts, 10 research posts, five managerial positions and about 45 executive and frontline positions.
In anticipation of the four-year curriculum in 2012, the university will undergo a massive recruitment drive over the next few years in which more than 100 new positions in various areas will be created and need to be filled.
The university considers itself unique in that its base curriculum is built around a whole-person education ethos grounded in a Christian heritage; balanced focus on arts and science; and dual emphasis on teaching and research.
