Counselling will be provided for pupils of a Catholic primary school in Yau Ma Tei after a teacher was charged with sexual intercourse with a child.
Alex Cheung Chi-hung, principal of Yau Ma Ti Catholic Primary School in Hoi Wang Road, said yesterday a crisis management group had been set up after teacher Chu Chi-wah's case was revealed in the media after he appeared in court.
'This case shocked us and I feel sad about it. I had never heard of any similar complaint in my 11 years' experience at school,' Mr Cheung said. 'We always respect the professionalism of our teachers, and we require our teachers to strictly follow our behaviour code. We never allow teachers to meet students in a closed room and teachers are reminded to avoid certain physical contact with students.'
He also said six psychologists would visit the school on Monday to assist students who were emotionally disturbed by the news.
Chu, 38, faces one charge of having sex with a child under 13, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
His case was first heard at Kowloon City Court on Thursday and no plea has been taken. The case was adjourned to November 13 and he has been released on bail.
