Zhou stuns top seed to reach Japan final
Hong Kong's Zhou Mi charged into the Japan Super Series singles final, brushing aside top seed Lu Lan of China 2-1 in Tokyo yesterday.
The seventh seed needed 52 minutes to come back from one game down before clinching a 9-12, 21-13, 21-13 win over Lu, who came fourth in the Olympic Games in Beijing last month. It was also Zhou's third victory over Lu since the former world number one donned Hong Kong colours in May last year.
Zhou won both matches against Lu when they met in the finals of the India Open and the Korea Super Series this year.
The Hong Kong shuttler will now need to overcome another mainlander, Wang Yihan, in today's final to clinch her second Super Series title for Hong Kong.
But 20-year-old Wang will be a hard nut to crack. The up-and-coming youngster made short work of second seed Tine Rasmussen of Denmark, 21-15, 21-18, in the other semi-final yesterday.
'Wang is a fast improving player and her performances in Tokyo has been exceptional,' said Hong Kong head coach Chan Chi-choi. 'But Zhou has vast experience on the circuit and should have a better chance, especially playing in a final.'
