Milk contamination spreads to candy, coffee
The mainland milk crisis deepened yesterday as Taipei authorities ordered an immediate recall of packs of Mr Brown instant coffee and milk tea containing contaminated milk powder imported from the mainland.
Hong Kong consumers were also thrown into a panic after unofficial tests showed more milk products were tainted, prompting leading retail chains to hastily take products off the shelves.
And authorities in Singapore said they had found a popular Chinese-made sweet - White Rabbit Creamy Candy - to be tainted with melamine.
The World Health Organisation also blamed Beijing for having failed to alert the international community earlier, as state leaders battled to contain the scandal.
In Taiwan, the Department of Health ordered King Car Food to recall eight of its products, including instant coffee and soup that were made in Taiwan with dairy ingredients imported from the mainland.
The products, including Mr Brown 3-in-1 Mandheling Coffee, and Mr Brown 3-in-1 Blue Mountain Coffee, which are widely available in Hong Kong, were found to contain melamine. Supplies in Hong Kong are yet to be recalled.
But King Car said the products sold in cans were free of the chemical.
