Two more dairy product manufacturers have recalled items in Hong Kong that have tested positive for melamine.
Nestle Hong Kong announced yesterday it was recalling the 1 litre Nestle Dairy Farm Pure Milk, for catering use, a day after the Centre for Food Safety found a level of 1.4ppm of melamine in a sample.
That  exceeds the limit under a new regulation  on melamine in food, according to the director of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Cheuk Wing-hing.
The  regulation limits melamine concentration in foods for children  under three  and pregnant and lactating women to 1mg per kilogram of food. The maximum for other foods is set at 2.5mg per kilogram.
Nestle expressed  regret about the incident.  The manufacturer said the batch  found with melamine was still in its warehouses  and was not available on the market.
The company said it would  recall  all batches of the affected product line.
It stressed that the level of melamine found  was low and that the product should be safe.
King Car Food  asked shops  to empty their shelves of five '3-in-1' Mr Brown instant drinks -   Mandheling Coffee, Blue Mountain Coffee, caramel macchiato, Arabica coffee and milk tea.
The batches of products recalled were manufactured between April and September this year.
The agent said the company was using milk powder manufactured in New Zealand until the last few months and blamed the supplier for providing tainted ingredients.
Suppliers of dairy products, ranging from milk powder and milk producers to  restaurants, fast-food chains, bakeries and coffee shops, have been assuring the public their products are safe.
Many milk and milk-powder producers said they had bought their  milk from Australia and New Zealand.
One famous local brand, Kowloon Dairy, said it obtained raw milk from the mainland but stressed that the milk was tested and melamine-free.
'Most restaurants in Hong Kong use milk from the Netherlands, New Zealand or Malaysia to prepare milk tea or other beverages,' said Ken Chan Wing-on, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades.
'They have been using those particular brands for a long time and they don't want to switch to other products sourced from the mainland,' Mr Chan added.
The Centre for Food Safety yesterday announced more results from its testing of 64 samples of  milk powder, milk beverages, desserts, frozen  confectionary, cheese, butter and cream.
All  the samples were free  of melamine.
