With most of the city's annual festivals taking place on Hong Kong Island, people living in the New Territories can easily feel left out.
The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong is trying to change that with a plan to stage the first Hong Kong Food Carnival at Kwai Chung Sports Ground next spring.
'The New Territories have a population of more than 3.5 million, accounting for more than 50 per cent of the Hong Kong population, but such a fair has not taken place in the New Territories,' association president Paul Yin Tak-shing said.
The association said it hoped the carnival would appeal to families in the New Territories who find travelling to the island for fairs like the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo too inconvenient.
Mr Yin said he understood the public's concern over food safety due to the recent tainted milk scandal.
The carnival's organisers said that due to the expanding food safety crisis emanating from the mainland, a strict examination system would be set up for the food products at the fair to ensure they would be up to standard.
