A drama club lets students act out their theatrical ambitions NADC is ... New Asia Drama Club. We are a CUHK-based drama interest group established in 1961. Unlike many university drama clubs that vote for a new, and often inexperienced, committee every year, we have a mix of experienced and fresh drama enthusiasts in our two-year-term committee. The current team is ... a bunch of curious students who are willing to challenge themselves by trying new things. Our club is like ... an apprenticeship. We give guidance to new team members. It's our tradition and responsibility to pass the torch of passion for drama to our successors. We produce an average of six shows in each two-year term. Limited resources ... trained us to use inventive approaches to express stories and moods such as through abstract lighting and sound effects Last summer ... we held our annual performance at the Fringe Club. The play was called Twittering Love Matters on Stage. The story was about love and how it can really drive us crazy. We had to learn quite a few mental illness terms. NADC doesn't ... only welcome CUHK students. We also encourage high school students to join us. Quite often we have high school student casts in our summer performances. We once ... sneaked into another university and practised in one of the lecture halls because CUHK is quite far away for some members of the club. Our high point ... is the accomplishment of creating a performance from nothing. From the preparation to final rehearsal to the first moment on stage, everything we experience is satisfying. Also, it feels great to be a part of a team that shares a common goal, the sense of belonging is encouraging. Low point ... we don't really have one. We just want to have fun so it's pointless to feel miserable about anything. Our next performance is ... Jules et Jim. Although it shares the same title as Francois Truffaut's classic film, it's about how fast-moving modern life pulls a person apart. It's scheduled to open on November 19 and we are casting now. Visit our Facebook page for more details. Local theatre groups we admire: Kearen Pang Production - the solo artist who single-handedly created the well-received 29+1 knows exactly what she wants Zuni Icosahedron - their stage designs and visual effects are innovative. Incisive stories on current affairs and social issues Windmill Grass Theatre - brilliant performances by award-winning actress Joey Leung Jo-yiu Theatre Space - good adaptations of translated plays to reflect Hong Kong society Theatre Horizon - put a lot of effort into providing drama-related workshops and are good at edgy integration of various performing arts We hope ... not just drama but performing arts in general will get more support from the government. We believe by making arts more accessible, more people will learn to appreciate them. Besides, there should be more resources available for young people interested in drama.
