Liberals urge honorary chairman post for James Tien

More than 90 Liberal Party members have signed letters urging former party chairman James Tien Pei-chun to become an honorary chairman, the party's acting chairwoman, Miriam Lau Kin-yee, said at a transport sector National Day reception yesterday. Some members even urged Mr Tien to resume the chairman's role he abandoned after the party's crushing defeat in geographical constituencies in this month's Legislative Council election. Ms Lau said it would be up to the party's standing committee to decide, after considering Mr Tien's personal will. She said Mr Tien had not expressed opposition to the idea but added that the chance of Mr Tien resuming the chairmanship was slim. Ms Lau said she would report to the party's committee on Monday so it could make a decision. It is believed that a motion on the honorary post, supported by most committee members, will be raised.

Exports and imports up in August but challenges loom

The Census and Statistics Department said the value of Hong Kong's goods exports rose 1.9 per cent year on year last month to HK$247.9 billion, while imports increased 1.5 per cent to HK$260.8 billion. A government spokesman said financial turbulence in the US had added further risks to the already weak global economy.
