MTR Corp fine-tunes new charging system
The MTR Corporation is putting its charging system through its final paces in preparation for Sunday's integration with the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation.
If the change goes smoothly it will allow the 200,000 commuters using single-journey tickets to enjoy the same concessions that Octopus card users have been offered since the two railways merged 10 months ago.
Operations manager Paul Chin Kam-wah said no bugs had been spotted in the new charging system during the final trial.
Engineers had inspected the wide ticket gates responsible for wrong fare deductions at the time of the merger last year but they seemed to be working satisfactorily.
The turnstiles of 100 ticket gates that used to set the MTR Corp network apart from that of the KCRC will be removed in the three interchange stations at Mei Foo, Nam Cheong and Kowloon Tong after midnight tomorrow.
The gate blocks - which will remain until the new system proves efficient - will be covered by yellow cloths with arrows giving directions for those switching trains.
