An opportunity has arisen for a competent and experienced tax expert to work on larger tax assignments for a growing international firm with a friendly, learning-oriented culture. A leading firm of certified public accountants and business advisers wants a Hong Kong tax senior manager. Baker Tilly Hong Kong, established in 1977, has about 180 local staff and partners of whom about 20 are in the tax division. It promotes a strong teamwork ethic rather than individualism. 'Initiatives such as our open office plan, buddy system and monthly new joiners party are some of the things that demonstrate our desire to promote a friendly and enjoyable working environment,' said Janet Bibi Ferreira, director of human resources and administration. The firm needs to expand its team of tax professionals to serve its growing number of clients. 'This is more than a desk job,' Ms Ferreira said. The new incumbent will handle Inland Revenue Department queries, including offshore claims, disputes and advance ruling. 'Apart from strong technical competency, the position entails a lot of communication with clients,' Ms Ferreira said. 'A highlight of the role is that it provides interesting and challenging work.' However, to ensure a work-life balance, good time management is a challenge facing candidates. Duties include providing on-the-job training to staff and closely monitoring their progress. 'Typically, you could be supervising five to eight staff,' Ms Ferreira said. Less than 10 per cent of the new recruit's working hours will be spent outside Hong Kong, mainly on the mainland. The ideal candidate is a qualified accountant, or lawyer, who is familiar with the Hong Kong tax regime. A knowledge of mainland tax issues is an advantage, while fluency in English, Putonghua and Cantonese is a must. Strong time management, teamwork and communication skills are also required. 'To lead a team of staff and communicate with clients on a daily basis, we are looking for an individual who can readily assume responsibility, is decisive but can also work as part of a team,' Ms Ferreira said. 'Ideally, we are seeking candidates with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience, with tax consulting as a main duty.' The firm provides regular in-house technical training and soft skills training. There is also an allowance for staff attending external training. 'The firm offers a defined career path and promotion prospects for staff,' Ms Ferreira said. 'For example, our regional tax director Joseph Lam was internally promoted.' Long-term opportunities for the successful recruit include promotion to director level.
