The Civic Party's Tanya Chan will enter the legislature next month with a message to the government: have faith in the political maturity of the younger generation.

Ms Chan, 37, has set herself the task of convening a youth summit, from which she will gather views to voice in the legislature.

The barrister and amateur actress, seen as one of the party's promising prospects, was all but guaranteed a seat in the Legislative Council when her party listed her at the top of its Hong Kong Island ticket.

She and party leader Audrey Eu Yuet-mee - ranked second on the list - were voted into Legco by 82,600 island residents.

Ms Chan, who made her debut in politics just last November by ousting Liberal Party incumbent Mark Lin Man-kit in the Peak constituency of Central and Western District Council, said one of her key objectives was to engage the younger generation.

She said one of the most memorable experiences during her campaign was the ability of her young volunteers to take responsibility.
