Since the 1997 handover, the Education Bureau has been promoting Chinese civic education in schools and through the media.
But in practice it is still only taught sparingly, mostly concentrating on history and on the morals and virtues of traditional Chinese society. Most schools have a flag rising ceremony in the morning and we hear the national anthem right before the evening news everyday. We are also encouraged, as citizens, to have a strong sense of belonging to China .
Yet, are Hong Kong students getting enough civic education? Are they well equipped with basic knowledge of their home country?
We tested our readers with three questions on Facebook and received some interesting replies. This small poll may not be conclusive, but to certain extent, it reflects how much Hong Kong students know about their home country.
Students have been asked to answer these questions without resorting to Google or Wikipedia
1) What do the five stars on the national flag stand for?
