Walling in a balcony and incorporating the area into your living space will have an effect on the overall fung shui of your home. Whether this will be positive or negative depends on the location of the balcony. For instance, if the wealth sector is where the balcony was, incorporating it into your living space will be a positive move.

In fung shui, balconies are considered external - areas where occupants spend very little time. So, the effect of an open balcony is negligible.

If you live in a flat, the new addition will probably not add more than 20 per cent to your overall living space, which means it will not need to have a separate time chart based on its construction.

However, if you live in a house, a new structural addition to the property - especially one that is free standing - will have to have its own chart.

If the new addition is incorporated into the house but shares the same entrance and exit, the original chart applies.

These home improvements are effective in addressing any missing sectors of your property. For those living in apartments, renovations need to take into account the approval of your building committee and neighbours - and it's worth bearing in mind that any work that disrupts the external appearance of your building will change the overall fung shui.
