A report of a child shoplifting sweets from a supermarket has set police on a hunt for the parents of five sisters aged 6 to 15 who were left unattended in their Shau Kei Wan home. The girls were in temporary care of the Po Leung Kuk last night as police sought the parents, who were believed to have gone to the mainland, leaving the elder girl with HK$1,000 to look after her sisters. The case unfolded when police received a report from a supermarket worker at Oi Tung Shopping Centre at 3.30pm saying a nine-year-old girl had stolen a pack of sweets. Officers took the girl, surnamed Wong, to her home in Oi Tung Estate and found her four sisters without adult care. The girls were taken to Chai Wan Police Station and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for examination before being handed over to the Po Leung Kuk. The case was classified as ill-treatment or neglect by those in charge of a child or young person. Police said the parents had gone to their mainland hometown with the girls' younger brother a few days ago.
