Serviced office provider sees demand in gambling city
Increasing rents compounded by the lack of available space in Hong Kong mean more local and foreign businesses are looking for offices in Macau.
Regus, a global provider of business centres, will open a business centre in Macau later this year to cater for the growing demand.
Regus country general manager of Greater China  Hans Leijten  said there was no doubt that the 'huge foreign investment' in Macau was driving demand for suitably equipped and serviced office space.
Mr Leijten said this trend was expected to continue for some time. 'Macau is an emerging market where Regus does not have a presence. This presents a great opportunity.'
Project management, engineering, event management, information technology, tourism, start-up companies, gaming and business service sectors are all driving demand for office space.
Mr Leijten said with so many multinational companies doing business in Macau, the opportunities were endless.
'With the huge injection of foreign investment and the booming tourism industry, we foresee that more companies will look into starting their businesses in Macau,' he said. 'We believe this will drive demand for office space in the city further and offers a great opportunity for Regus to leverage on. We are very optimistic about our growth in Macau.'
The Regus business centre will be on the 17th and 18th floors of Central Plaza, Macau.  It will offer fully furnished and equipped offices, business support services, meeting, conference and training facilities, and video conferencing equipment. Virtual office and virtual personal assistant services will also be available. A virtual office is a common term for shared office services used to support the growing trend of people who travel frequently for business or who work from home and do not need a permanent office. Services include a dedicated business address, phone and mail services and access to offices and facilities when needed. Offices will be available at the centre for individuals and groups of more than 100 people and for any length of time.
Regus Asia human resources director  Nandita Debur  said the company was looking to employ up to five people to staff the Macau centre, including a general manager, operations manager and customer service staff.
She said Regus would first look at the Macau talent pool to find qualified people and then internationally. 'We hope to recruit high calibre talent to join our team,' Ms Debur said. 'We will look for local candidates as a first step and hope to receive many interested candidates in the coming months.'
Ms Debur said staff development was a priority and talented employees could have a chance to work at other Regus offices around the region. Regus operates 950 business centres in 400 cities across 70 countries. The company serves more than 200,000 clients each day.
Ms Debur said the company operated a 'pay for performance' scheme that rewarded staff with commissions and a bonus plan.
All new employees undergo an induction programme spanning between two and three weeks under the supervision of a mentor. A variety of in-house training is also provided through e-learning programmes covering everything from product knowledge to customer service skills.
'Regus offers career growth opportunities across Asia-Pacific and potentially in the 70 countries we operate in,' Ms Debur said. 'Among other training programmes all Regus general managers and operations managers are offered the opportunity to attend a week-long school of excellence training.'
Regus, like many businesses in Macau and the government, is banking on the success of the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) push in the region. Mr Leijten said there was a great deal of potential for the city to serve as a primary MICE destination and play a role as a secondary destination for companies holding events in Hong Kong and the mainland.
'With the number of star-rated hotels now open and opening soon in Macau, we are seeing a growing supply of bedrooms and convention halls for the MICE market,' he said. 'I believe this together with entertainment activities such as gambling, facilities, shows and a variety of restaurants will make Macau even more attractive as a destination.'
Mr Leijten said Regus would be one of the first international serviced office providers in Macau.
