Hong Kong otakus were out in force last Tuesday for Anison uber-group Jam Project - the group's first Hong Kong show did not disappoint.
Hironobu Kageyama, Hiroshi Kitadani, Masaaki Endoh, Masami Okui and Yoshiki Fukuyama performed their hits from various anime shows and video games, covering a wide spectrum of styles from hard rock to soft ballads.
The event started off with the hard rock number No Border performed in English to a roaring crowd of otakus.
Then came the solos. Kageyama sang Heats, the theme song to Shin Getta Robo; Endoh sang Gaogaigar; Kitadani performed We Are, the first theme song from One Piece; songstress Okui sang the Revolutionary Girl Utena theme song; and Fukuyama chose the Busou Renkin theme song.
The highlight of the evening was the acoustic performance of the theme song from Doraemon (better known in Hong Kong as Ding Dong) which the group sang in both Japanese and Cantonese, with the ecstatic Hong Kong crowd singing along in both languages. At the after-concert press conference, Jam Project said they were amazed that Hong Kong otakus knew the Japanese lyrics as well as the Cantonese ones.
The concert ended with two encores. Jam Project performed Hagane No Messiah, Gong and Skill, the perfect end to a fun-filled night.
