Authorities in Cixi, Zhejiang province, have dismissed claims that the cooking oil used by a kindergarten was substandard and had caused enlarged intestinal lymph nodes in hundreds of children.

Following complaints of abdominal pain from students at the Cixi Kindergarten for Sports and Arts, more than 200 children were diagnosed with swollen mesenteric lymph nodes by Monday, Xinhua reported. Parents suspected that the cooking oil the kindergarten used was to blame for the illnesses.

Doctors called in by the Cixi government announced yesterday that most of the cases of swollen lymph nodes were not clinically significant and would require no medical attention.

But further tests needed to be conducted on a few children who showed other symptoms, according to the Xinhua report.
