The latest dining hot-spot by Sir David Tang, founder of the China Clubs in Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore, clothing brand Shanghai Tang and China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel in London, opened last month in Central. Island Tang is an expansive and elegantly designed space that evokes an Art Deco dining room of the 1930s. Chairs are clam-shell shaped and in soft brown or mustard yellow, and walls are mirrored or wood-panelled and hung with paintings, sketches and cartoons. The mirrors, ceiling fans and patterned carpet give it the feel of a gentleman's club of yesteryear. The fare is traditional Cantonese, which the restaurant cooks simply and expertly, with classic favourites such as char siu, hot-and-sour seafood soup, steamed prawns with kale, and baked crab meat (pictured below) with mild curry sauce in crab shell. The traditional menu is well complemented by a contemporary wine list and an extensive range of cocktails served from the long bar decorated with shapely opaque yellow glassware. Expect to spend an average of HK$300 for lunch and HK$500 for dinner including soft drinks. The restaurant is open every day from noon for lunch, followed by afternoon tea and dinner.
