Pui O Beach, Lantau Island, 2984 8710 FARE Western barbecue classics, such as salads, steaks and skewers; and fish and chips, cheese fondue and burgers. AMBIENCE Only open on weekends and public holidays, this cheerful beachside restaurant is very casual, with diners and waiters in shorts and flip flops. COST HK$300 for three courses without drinks, although with the size of the portions you may only manage two courses. WHO TO BRING Your family, your junk mates needing to fill up on good-quality food off the grill and jugs of frozen margaritas, or a group of friends needing a break from the big city. TURN-ONS Considering it's such a relaxed affair, with drinks served in plastic cups, the standard of the food, particularly the steak, was a surprise. The tomatoes in the fresh buffalo mozzarella with tomato and basil salad were plump, firm and delicious, while the prawns on the mixed green salad with homemade dressing were soft and sprinkled with buttery garlic chunks. The 12oz rib-eye steak, in a light peppery marinade, was tender and flavourful. TURN-OFFS The food all came very quickly, and the size of the portions was a little overwhelming. The Around the World skewers (New Zealand lamb, Brazilian beef, chicken and garlic balsamic shrimps) were sprinkled with bottled sauces, smothering the natural flavours. There were only two desserts - ice cream and cheesecake - although we had no room anyway. DRINKS House wines (HK$150; HK$45 by the glass) in red and white are solid Argentine wines. There are two other reds, four whites and a rose, all reasonably priced. Jugs of sangria or frozen cocktails (HK$210) are perfect accompaniments for hot days at the beach.
