Donald Tsang Yam-kuen received his first undergraduate student card yesterday from radical lawmaker Wong Yuk-man.
Mr Wong, chairman of the League of Social Democrats, and independent Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee also gave him books to brush up on economics and political science - perhaps the first time the pair have found political common ground.
Both offered the books to Mr Tsang during the chief executive's question-and-answer session in the Legislative Council on his policy address, delivered on Wednesday.
Living up to his pledge to give Mr Tsang a lecture on political science, Mr Wong brought two books explaining 'the third way', as well as a copy of the league's manifesto and a student card.
On Wednesday, Mr Tsang said the government should take a 'third way' between free-market orthodoxy and intervention.
The former radio host and journalism lecturer cited a passage in the policy address in which Mr Tsang reflected on the idea, saying: 'We should adopt a moderate approach to balance the various interests of society, and seek collaboration and consensus ... rather than resort to confrontation, struggle and conflict.'
Mr Wong asked: 'Did anyone give you a briefing before you wrote this? What is the 'third way'?'
