Jin Yinhuan , chairwoman of the provincial Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was a long-serving graft fighter in the coal-rich province.

A report by China News Service heaped praise on Jin, 56, saying she 'had dedicated her life to the revolution ... and to the people'. It said that apart from her family, people who bid farewell to her included 'leaders from Shanxi province and many of her former colleagues'.

Jin was in an SUV returning to Taiyuan after a three-day fact-finding trip in Xinzhou when her car was hit by a Camry sedan and rolled over to the side of the road. She was severely injured along with her secretary and driver.

The chairwoman and her driver died several days later.

But what had seemed like a simple traffic mishap took on a new twist after mainland media reported that the driver of the sedan was Li Yi , deputy chairman of the Xinzhou People's Political Consultative Conference.
