The sail is the yacht's power. It is what moves the boat forward and is used to control speed.

Most dinghies you see have a triangular sail - like the one in the picture. This is called a Bermuda rig or sloop. A rig is the format of the sails. But, there are many different shapes and sizes of sails that you may see out on the water. These include:

This is the kind of sail you'll see most often. It is the standard, triangle-shaped sail. The sail is joined to a big pole in the centre of the boat. The pole is called a mast.
