Hong Kong's Au wins international acclaim

Annie Au

Hong Kong's Annie Au Wing-chi has been named Young Player of the Year by the Women's International Squash Players' Association. Au, who reached the second round of the World Open in Manchester last week before losing to world number two Natalie Grinham of the Netherlands, is the first Hong Kong player to earn this honour. Au, who beat four other candidates, won her most important title at the Australian Open in August. The teenager is considered the heir apparent to Hong Kong champion Rebecca Chiu Wing-yin and is ranked 28th in the world, although she has yet to turn professional. The 19-year-old, a second-year university student, has already gone beyond what Chiu had accomplished when she was the same age.
