The Hong Kong Singers

Technical issues aside - an uneven amplified sound level and  clumsy set changes - the Hong Kong Singers' production of Disney's Beauty   and the Beast  is a top-notch locally produced musical,  featuring strong performances.
This is the Broadway version of the Oscar-winning animated movie, with music by Alan Menken,  and Howard Ashman  and Tim Rice  penning the lyrics based on the book by Linda Woolverton.  It  has some well-known tunes such as Belle,  Home,  A Change in Me  and, of course, the title number.
But this show has more than just good music. Director John Tustin  and musical director Scott Gibson  have drawn much energy  and  emotion from their cast,  who delivered a  touching performance.
The heart-warming fairy tale revolves around Belle (Joyce Wong),  a righteous but 'odd' village girl, and the Beast (Olivier de Molina)  a prince cursed by an enchantress for being selfish and unkind. The only way he  can lift the  spell is to find someone to fall in love with him.
Wong makes a brave Belle with  a confident voice to match.  De Molina's Beast was broody and sensitive.  The costume design by Yu Toi-ling  looked a little absurd and the set  lacked grandeur. But the outstanding singing, acting and the 11-piece orchestra  in the pit  kept the magic alive.
