Those who oppose mandatory PE lessons may argue that individuals should not be forced into something they don't want to do. But if students don't do compulsory exercise at school, it is unlikely they will be able to stay fit in their own time.
PE is more than just learning how to play different sports. It offers an all-round education. It also helps improve physical and social skills, which is far more than most academic subjects achieve.
In addition, PE introduces students to sports they may not have tried out before. If PE is optional, many students will miss out on the opportunity to make full use of their talents and enjoy sports.
Once they have a taste of what sport can offer, they are more likely to remain active for life.
Talented students may even go on to become professional sportsmen.
