American Idol's chief makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy (below right, with host Ryan Seacrest) applies makeup on the show's judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. She explains how to achieve a natural look: 'I work on a lot of men and they are harder to do because you want to make them look like they have nothing on while looking flawless, so I have perfected this look which can also be used on women. 'Makeup is there to enhance what you have. You want people to say 'She's gorgeous,' not 'Look at her makeup.' 'You want foundation that gives you great coverage but is not too thick. Know your type of skin because the wrong foundation could make you look too oily or too dry. 'It's important to find a concealer that exactly matches your foundation - don't use one that's lighter as this attracts attention to eye bags. The concealer needs to be mixed with eye cream so it's not too thick. 'On the days when you don't want to wear makeup, curl your lashes because this will make a big difference. I do this for men who don't want to wear mascara but who want an eye lift. 'Make sure you use the curler close to the lash line - squeeze and hold for a second, then pull out and squeeze again. Do this a third time so that your lashes look naturally curled. 'If you need to touch up your makeup throughout the day use blotting powder, which is not as thick as regular powder. 'Also, fake tans on the face are a no-no because the skin gets blotchy and it's difficult to even out. If you must get a fake tan then just do the legs and arms.' Mezhgan Hussainy will be in Hong Kong to conduct makeup classes from November 20-22. For tickets go to getsmarthongkong.com
