Ocean Park is already a top destination for tourists and locals alike. To boost its popularity, the theme park can build Hong Kong's largest concert hall and an eco-themed shopping area aimed at young adults.

These are some of the ideas that helped the University of California, Berkley (UCB) beat 18 of the world's top undergraduate business schools in an Apprentice-like competition.

The Citi International Case Competition 2008, jointly organised by Citi and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business and Management, was held last month.

This year, the students had to come up with practical ideas for Ocean Park's empty plot of land at Tai Shue Wan.

They only knew about their task after flying into Hong Kong. Then they visited Ocean Park and were given 26 hours to conduct research and brainstorm ideas before making their presentations to a panel which included Thomas Mehrmann, chief executive of the Ocean Park Corporation.

While other teams proposed building fancy new attractions at Ocean Park, UCB took a different approach. Their objective was to expand the existing elements and target infrequent guests, such as 26- to 30-year-olds.
