Life gets flipped upside-down when an ancient tree deity becomes human and enter the life of a junior high school student in new anime Kannagi. Kannagi first appeared in the debut issue of anthology magazine Comic Rex and is based on a manga of the same name written and illustrated by Eri Takenashi. The anime production is being handled by A-1 Pictures Inc, which has produced such shows as last years baseball anime Okiku Furikabutte and sci-fi anime Persona -trinity soul-. In Japanese spiritualism, shrines and sacred objects like trees and stones are believed to house gods and be the source of all living things. They also protect the land, people and all livings things from the dark impurities created by negative feelings. If these impurities are not exorcised, they can cause disruptions to the natural balance. If they attach themselves to humans, they can cause despair and misfortune, so it is the job of these sacred deities to protect us and the land from such darkness. Jin Mikuriya carves a wooden statue of a shrine maiden for an art project, using a felled tree. To his surprise, when Jin finishes the wooden idol, it comes alive. The girl introduces herself as Nagi and informs Jin that she is a deity. Her host tree was cut down due to urban planning, cancelling out her abilities, and Nagi finds herself powerless. She needs Jin's help to exorcise the darkness which threatens to overtake all their lives. Keep a lookout for this humorous show - it should be appearing on the Animax channel soon.
