The theme of the ninth Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival (HKJFF), which will run from this Saturday to November 23 at the Palace IFC cinema, is 'Cholent', a traditional Jewish dish with a variety of ingredients - 'a little bit of this, a little bit of that'.
This year's festival features films about determined teenagers, restless adults and immigrants struggling with new lives in Israel. There will also be some classics from the 1930s and 1940s, and even a movie starring a Jewish 'Indiana Jones'.
Four films have Chinese subtitles: Noodle, Max Minsky and Me, Lemon Tree and Blessed is the Match: The Life and Death of Hannah Senesh.
For Chinese viewers, Noodle, featuring Chinese boy star Chen Baoqi in the leading role, is probably the best choice. The movie is about a Chinese boy who is brought to Israel by his migrant-worker mother.
The boy is left alone and helpless when his mother is deported by the Israeli government.
Miri, a flight attendant for an Israeli airline quits her job to take care of the boy and help him find his mother.
