Should eggs be tested for melamine at the border?

Following the melamine-tainted-milk scandal, the industrial chemical usually used to make plastic has also been found in eggs from Shanxi , Hubei and Liaoning . This has caused panic among residents in Hong Kong.

My friend has a job in a Taiwanese restaurant, and most of the dishes prepared there contain eggs. No matter how many times the waiters said that the eggs that came from the mainland were safe, customers still would not order any food containing them. This shows that people have less confidence now in products from the mainland.

A lot of local wholesalers are worried about the eggs they import. They say that mainland authorities have only tested for bird flu and Sudan IV dye.

What the Hong Kong government should do is test for melamine at the border and thus allay our fears. How can we be sure about eggs from over the border if they have a certificate issued only by the mainland authorities? Only if the Hong Kong government tests will people feel the eggs are safe.
