A dismembered body, believed to be that of a Hong Kong man who had been missing for more than two months, was found in a flat in Macau yesterday morning.
Although further examination was required to confirm the victim's identity, an initial investigation suggested the body was that of Lai King-man, a 60-year-old Hong Kong man last seen in Macau on September 6.
At about 10am, a resident of Phoenix Garden on Rua de Luis Gonzaga Gomes called police after noticing a foul smell coming from a fourth-floor apartment.
Police discovered three suitcases packed with badly decomposed body parts that had been wrapped in plastic bags. The body parts and suitcases were taken away for further examination.
The smell was so strong, residents had to cover their noses and mouths as government workers removed the suitcases.
'I think the body was already rotten ... at this stage we cannot confirm the identity of it, whether it was male or female,' a spokesman for the Macau Judiciary Police said.
'However, we immediately believed that it was related to the case of the missing Hong Kong man, who was actively involved in casinos,' the spokesman said.
