KAI Tak airport has overtaken Frankfurt to become the world's second-busiest for international cargo, according to the Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals (HACTL).
Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Transport's trans-delta conference yesterday, HACTL managing director Anthony Charter said the latest throughput figures show Kai Tak achieved a record 1.16 million tonnes in 1993.
This compares with Frankfurt figures indicating that 1.12 million tonnes of international cargo was handled in the same period.
Tokyo's Narita airport is still believed to be the tops, although its final throughput figures for 1993 have yet to be announced.
Narita handled 1.32 million tonnes of international air cargo in 1992.
Mr Charter said the rapid growth in air cargo at Kai Tak, up 21.6 per cent last year, made early progress on the Chek Lap Kok airport essential.
